Word study · Greek
doulos
slave, servant
Say it: DOO-los (approximate)
δοῦλος
What it means
A person owned by someone else, with no rights of their own. English Bibles often soften it to "servant," but the sense is slave. In the Roman world a slave was property and often the lowest rung of society, which is why Jesus' saying about the first becoming slave is so sharp.
