What it means
Literally "to give over": to hand someone over to another's power. It's the word for Judas's betrayal, but also for the leaders handing Jesus to Pilate, Pilate handing him to be crucified, and, in Paul's letters, God giving up his Son. English has to choose "betray," "hand over," or "deliver" depending on who is acting; the Greek uses one word throughout.
