Sources and credits
The open datasets behind this site, what we use each one for, and how we changed it. Data was fetched on October 19, 2026.
- Used for
- Bible text
- Changes we made
- Only the book being studied is used. Formatting and footnote markers are dropped; verses are grouped into the paragraphs given in the source.
- Note
- Text is public domain. The JSON packaging repo has no license of its own; we use only the public-domain verse text.
- Version used
- TehShrike/world-english-bible at 68669ba
- Used for
- Places, coordinates, confidence, and map outlines
- Changes we made
- Filtered to the places in the book. We keep each place's top identification, its confidence score (relabeled High, Likely, Possible, or Uncertain), its verse list for the book, and the dataset's simplified outline with coordinates rounded to 4 decimal places.
- Note
- Some geometry derives from OpenStreetMap (ODbL 1.0); those items are marked.
- Version used
- openbibleinfo/Bible-Geocoding-Data at 7eb18a5
- Used for
- Some outlines inside the OpenBible geocoding data
- Changes we made
- Used only through OpenBible's simplified outlines (currently the Jordan River).
- Note
- Credited because some geometry we store comes from OpenStreetMap via OpenBible.
- Used for
- People, family relationships, and verse references
- Changes we made
- Filtered to named people in the book. We keep names, family links, and verse references for the book. Dates and Easton's dictionary text are not used.
- Note
- Share-alike: files derived from this dataset carry CC BY-SA 4.0.
- Version used
- robertrouse/theographic-bible-metadata at 52e049e
- Used for
- Hebrew and Greek text tagging, Strong's numbers, and lexicon entries
- Changes we made
- We read the Strong's numbers tagged at each verse to find every use of a word, count its uses in the Hebrew Bible or New Testament, and show the brief lexicon entry (shortened for long Greek entries). HTML in the lexicon text is converted to plain text.
- Version used
- STEPBible/STEPBible-Data at ed476a8
- Used for
- Cross-references with relevance votes
- Changes we made
- Filtered to verses in the book. Votes for the same target are added up per chapter, links within the book are left out, and the top few are shown alongside our hand-picked references.
- Note
- OpenBible's file (dated 2024-11-04 in its header), read from the scrollmapper mirror because openbible.info isn't reachable from our build environment.
