tektōn

craftsman, carpenter

Say it: TEK-tone (approximate)

τέκτων

What it means

A builder who worked with wood and often stone, so "carpenter" can be too narrow. Matthew has the villagers call Jesus "the carpenter's son"; Mark's Gospel has them call Jesus himself a tekton. Either way, it places him in a working family that the whole village knew.

Range of meaning

  • CarpenterA worker in wood.
  • BuilderA craftsman in wood, stone, or building generally.

In Matthew

  • Chapter 13

    "Isn't this the carpenter's son?" (13:55).
