Word study · Greek
aphiēmi
to forgive, release, leave
Say it: ah-FEE-ay-mee (approximate)
ἀφίημι
What it means
Literally "to send away" or "to let go." The same verb is used for leaving something behind (the fishermen left their nets), for allowing something, and for releasing someone from a debt or a sin. That second sense is why the story of the servant, where a debt is let go, and the call to forgive fit together so closely. STEPBible tags these senses separately: "leave," "forgive," and "permit."
