Word study · Greek
euangelizomai
to announce good news
Say it: yoo-ang-gel-ID-zom-eye (approximate)
εὐαγγελίζομαι
What it means
The verb behind "gospel." Luke uses it more than any other Gospel: Gabriel announces John's birth (1:19), the angel announces Jesus' birth (2:10), John preaches (3:18), and Jesus says it is why he was sent (4:18, 4:43). It means to bring news worth celebrating, as a messenger from a battlefield would.
