aposynagōgos

put out of the synagogue

Say it: ap-os-oon-AG-o-gos (approximate)

ἀποσυνάγωγος

What it means

"Away from the synagogue." It appears only in John (9:22, 12:42, 16:2): people who confess Jesus as the Christ are, or will be, expelled from the synagogue. The word reflects the pain of John's community, who lost their place in the Jewish community. How formal and how widespread the expulsion was is debated.
