What’s happening

Finally, brothers, Paul urges and exhorts them in the Lord Jesus that, as they received from him how they must walk and please God, they should abound more and more. They know what instructions he gave them through the Lord Jesus. "For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to possess himself of his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don't know God; that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified. For God didn't call us for uncleanness, but in sanctification. Therefore he who rejects this doesn't reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you." About brotherly love they have no need for anyone to write, for they themselves are taught by God to love one another, and they do this toward all the brothers in all Macedonia; but Paul urges them to abound more and more, and to "aspire to lead a quiet life, and to mind your own business, and to work with your hands, even as we instructed you; that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing." Then, concerning those who have fallen asleep: "We don't want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who are asleep, so that you don't grieve, even as the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left to the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God. The dead in Christ will rise first, then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore comfort one another with these words."

Why the setting matters

Chapter 4 turns from memory and prayer to instruction. The call to "abstain from sexual immorality" must be read against the background of a port city where sex was part of religious worship and commerce and was generally unrestrained; Paul's ban was radical. The phrase "possess his own vessel" (skeuos) in 4:4 can mean control his own body or acquire (or live with) his own wife, and translators and commentators are divided. The words about "mind your own business" and "work with your hands" fit a church in which some may have stopped working because they expected the Lord to return soon (see 5:14 and 2 Thessalonians 3:6-12). The passage on those who "have fallen asleep" (4:13-18) answers a real worry: believers had died since Paul left, and the Thessalonians feared they had missed out on the Lord's return. Paul's answer is that the dead in Christ will rise first and that all will be with the Lord. The word translated "meet" (apantēsis) was used for a delegation going out to welcome a visiting official and escorting him into the city, which fits the picture of believers going out to meet the Lord and coming with him. How this passage fits with the rest of the New Testament's teaching on the end, including the idea of a "rapture" and its timing, has long been debated by Christians; the passage itself is about comfort, and ends with "comfort one another with these words."

Who’s in this chapter

Paul

Urges holy living and comforts the grieving.

The believers in Thessalonica

Learning to please God and grieve with hope.

The Lord Jesus

Who will descend from heaven with a shout.

The Gentiles who don't know God

Whose passion and lust the believers must not imitate.

Talk it through

  1. Paul says holiness is "the will of God." What do the practical examples (sex, work, love) tell you about what holiness looks like?
  2. He says "aspire to live quietly... work with your hands." Why might ordinary, unglamorous living be a goal?
  3. Paul doesn't say believers shouldn't grieve, only not to grieve "as those who have no hope." What does hope change about grief?
  4. The passage ends with "comfort one another with these words." How would you use it that way?

1Finally then, brothers, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, that you abound more and more. 2For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. 3For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, 4that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, 5not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don’t know God, 6that no one should take advantage of and wrong a brother or sister in this matter; because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as also we forewarned you and testified. 7For God called us not for uncleanness, but in sanctification. 8Therefore he who rejects this doesn’t reject man, but God, who has also given his Holy Spirit to you.

9But concerning brotherly love, you have no need that one write to you. For you yourselves are taught by God to love one another, 10for indeed you do it toward all the brothers who are in all Macedonia. But we exhort you, brothers, that you abound more and more; 11and that you make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, even as we instructed you; 12that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and may have need of nothing.

13But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. 14For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 15For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first, 17then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore comfort one another with these words.
